About This Course
Mastering French Prepositions, Time, Place & Duration
This module provides students with a comprehensive and practical introduction to the different uses of prepositions in French. It is designed to help learners understand the grammatical rules behind prepositions and, more importantly, apply them accurately in both spoken and written French.
The module begins with countries, cities, and continents, focusing on their grammatical gender and the appropriate prepositions used with them, particularly en, au, and aux. Students will learn how to correctly express geographical locations and destinations while avoiding common errors.
The module then explores prepositions of place, including sur, sous, au-dessus de, au-dessous de, dessus, dessous, dedans, dehors, à côté de, près de, and loin de. Their meanings, grammatical functions, and practical applications are explained through examples and exercises.
Special attention is also given to the distinction between departments, regions, and federal states, including the prepositions and constructions commonly associated with them, such as en, dans le, and dans les. Students will also learn how to express origin and provenance using forms such as de, du, de la, and des.
Another important part of the module focuses on expressing time and duration. Learners will explore the differences between depuis, pour, pendant, and en, as well as how to correctly talk about dates, days of the week, months, and seasons in French.
The module further examines the prepositions and expressions used to describe distance, direction, position, and points of reference, including à, de…à, jusqu’à, à partir de, vers, environ, entre, and parmi.
Finally, students will learn how to express past and future time relationships, including the use of il y a" to mean “ago” with past-tense constructions, dans for future time expressions, and other essential structures for expressing before and after in French.
By the end of this module, students will have developed a stronger understanding of French prepositions and be better equipped to use them accurately, naturally, and confidently in everyday communication and in French-language examinations such as the TCF Canada and TEF Canada.
